jm10First held in 1957, the John Moores Contemporary Painting Prize is the UK's best-known painting competition and is named after
Sir John Moores (1896 - 1993), the founder of the prize. The competition culminates in an exhibition held at the Walker Art Gallery every two years, which forms a key strand of the Liverpool Biennial. 
The John Moores exhibition is held in partnership with the John Moores Liverpool Exhibition Trust, and although the appearance of each exhibition changes, the principles remain constant: to support artists and to bring to Liverpool the best contemporary painting from across the UK. Royal Society of Portrait PaintersThe Royal Society of Portrait Painters' Annual exhibition has 4 major awards, offering a total of £17,000 in prize money. £10,000 on offer to the The Ondaatje Prize for Portraiture as well as the Society's GOLD Medal for most distinguished portrait in the exhibition. £2000 on offer to each of the following, The Prince of Wales Award for Portrait Drawing, and The Changing Faces Prize. worcesteropen10In collaboration with Worcestershire Contemporary Artists and the PITT Studio, Worcester City Art Gallery will be co-hosting the fourth Worcester Open Exhibition. The exhibition is not themed but will be exploring the methods of selection and curatorial processes associated with Open type exhibitions and the role of mentor and protégé in visual art galleries. Two exhibitions of art from practicing contemporary artists. One salon style, selection-free exhibition at the PITT artist-led space, and one selected exhibition at the Worcester Art Gallery and Museum.  What's the difference between the two shows? All artists who apply will have one work selected and displayed, this will be shown either at the PITT or the Worcester Art Gallery & Museum. There is a selection process for both venues; however artists will be guaranteed an entry (upon delivery) of at least one artwork at the PITT or, if selected, at the Worcester Art Gallery. Please submit up to 3 works made since January 2006. 2-D all mediums. 3-D sculpture assemblage or installation. Video and Audio, time based and digital. British Women Arts Prize 2009

The Open West 2010
The Open West
is an annual open competition and exhibition inviting submissions from national and international artists practising contemporary and conceptual art, inclusive of painting, installation, film, photography, print and sculpture. The exhibition is being held in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire from 17 February to 13 March 2010. A major award of £1,500 and two additional awards of £750 will be announced at the preview night. The panel of selectors for 2010 includes the curators Lyn Cluer Coleman and Sarah Goodwin, together with artists Terry Duffy and Clara Clark. An artist residency will be offered at the Meantime project space in Cheltenham during the period of the exhibition. Fee £20 for up to four works. The Guasch-Coranty Foundation announces the call for its International Painting Prize open to professional artists under 40 years of age with a degree or equivilant. The prize seeks to promote and disseminate the most innovative pictorial art on an international scale, this being understood as a broad discipline that may include new supports. The works will be judged according to both their technical and conceptual quality in relation to the new language of contemporary art. Lynn Paniter Staines Prize 2009
The Lynn-Painter Stainers Prize 2009 - Created in 2005 with the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers and the Lynn Foundation with The Spectator as media sponsor. The purpose of the Prize is to encourage creative representational painting and promote the skill of draughtsmanship. This annual exhibition is open to all UK artists with prize money totalling £22,500 and an engraved gold medal for the winner. Regional collection points throughout the UK in September.  Judges for 2009 are as follows : Angela Flowers [Director, Flowers Gallery] , Mick Rooney RA [artist], Daphne Todd OBE PPRP NEAC [artist], Susan Wilson [artist], Andrew Wilton [Visiting Research Fellow at Tate Britain], Ian Fair [Trustee of the Lynn Foundation]  will act as non-voting Chairman of the panel. Ely International Open Art Competition 2009The Ely International Open Art Competition 2009 is open to Visual contemporary artists from around the world, working in any medium, are invited to submit their entries for an exhibition to be held in The Long Gallery at The Old Palace in the beautiful and historic city of Ely, in Cambridgeshire. The competition will culminate in a fund-raising launch party and selling exhibition in November 2009. A commission of 25% will be placed on all sales from the exhibition, all of which will be donated to Sue Ryder Care. Entry fee is £9 per work, and up to three works may be submitted. ING DISCERNING EYE 2009The ING Discerning Eye Exhibition is a show of small works independently selected by six prominent figures from different areas of the art world: two artists, two collectors and two critics. Work is selected from open submission and also from artists invited by the individual selectors. Each section is hung separately to emphasise its own distinctive identity. The impression emerges of six small exhibitions within the whole. It provides an unusual opportunity for works by lesser-known artists to be hung alongside contributions from internationally recognised names. The selectors are solely responsible for their own selection. The only restrictions are limitation of size and to select at least 25% of their section from the open submission. .
