Now in its 240th year, the exhibition includes around 1,200 works and the majority of works are for sale. This year’s exhibition coordinators are Royal Academicians Humphrey Ocean, Tony Cragg and Gordon Benson, and the theme is Man Made.  Highlights of the show include a memorial gallery dedicated to the extraordinary artistic achievements of the late RB Kitaj, featuring some of Kitaj’s greatest works alongside recent paintings which are available for sale. Recently elected Academician Tracey Emin has curated a gallery, and the exhibition also includes a dedicated area for photographic works.  Finally, the Academy's Courtyard plays host to a monumental sculpture by Sir Anthony Caro, titled Promenade. Once again the Academy is working closely with BBC2 on a special edition of The Culture Show which will celebrate Summer Exhibition 2008.

Emma Knowles Welsh Portrait Award 2008

The Wales Portrait Award 2008 Mike Knowles and Emma Knowles were both shortlisted in the final 52 selected portraits for the 2008 touring exhibition.  Emma Knowles' portrait of Rebecca, and Mike Knowles' self portrait will be exhibited along with 50 other artists' work.   The Wales Portrait Award is a new Biennial designed to increase the awareness of portraiture as a fine art discipline. We are proud to have two artists represented in the final 52.  Little has been done to encourage portraiture in Wales since the late 19th century and this award is designed to redeem this gap in provision and to restore this important art form to its rightful place in a modern Wales. This is an inclusive initiative encouraging entries of original paintings from artists of any age living, working or born in Wales. The competition is also open to artists of any nationality whose work depicts a Welsh subject . The exhibition will be selected by a panel of judges. This is a consortia project organised by Denbighshire County Council with Bodelwyddan Castle, the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, St. David's Hall, Cardiff, and the Williamson Art Gallery and Museum, Birkenhead.  Tour Venues thru 2008 are as follows:
