Artist Statement

Sue Hotchkis is a textile artist specializing in bold, abstract contemporary embroidered wall pieces.

My work is a response to my surrounding environment at home and abroad. I am constantly drawn to surfaces that are affected by the elements and the passing of time. I aim to distil the essence of place, evoking sensations of being there, capturing traces and fragments: faded lettering, peeling paint, eroding walls and pavements. Portraying both beauty and decay. Challenging our perceptions of beauty.

I approach the composition intuitively. Playing with the notion of space along with the interaction of colour and texture creating structures that act as a metaphor for boarded up windows, walls and doorways.

I use many processes initially dyeing, printing and discharging the fabric. Followed by machine and hand stitching. The fabric is manipulated through many stages each technique building up tactile layers that transform the surface.
